CyberStars of Uganda 2022: Bugema University Triumphs in National Cybersecurity Showdown

The CyberStars of Uganda 2022 competition, organized by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in partnership with Silensec, was a thrilling event designed to address the growing cybersecurity skills gap in Uganda. This prestigious competition brought together university students from across the country, providing them with a platform to demonstrate their skills in tackling real-world cybersecurity challenges.

Bugema University was proudly represented by Kasingye Viva from the Kampala Campus and Richard Dushime from the Main Campus, both pursuing a BSc in Software Engineering. Their participation was guided by an exceptional leadership team composed of Mr. Kosea Muwanga, David Kitumba, and Joseph Mugerwa. With their mentorship, the students were well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

The semi-finals, held on July 28, 2022, saw Bugema University students competing in a variety of categories, including ethical hacking, cyber defense, programming, and incident response. The competition was intense, as participants faced simulated cybersecurity scenarios that tested their skills and knowledge. Thanks to their dedication and the expert guidance of their team leaders, Kosea Muwanga, David Kitumba, and Joseph Mugerwa, the Bugema University team performed exceptionally well, earning a place in the finals.

The finals, which took place on July 29, 2022, featured the top cybersecurity talents in Uganda. Bugema University’s representatives stood out for their innovative thinking and ability to handle complex cyber threats, competing against the brightest minds from other universities. Their strong performance was a testament to the university’s commitment to fostering cybersecurity education and building local talent capable of addressing the challenges of the digital age.

Under the leadership of Mr. Kosea Muwanga, David Kitumba, and Joseph Mugerwa, Bugema University’s team demonstrated not only their technical abilities but also their resilience and problem-solving skills. Their success in the competition highlighted the university’s role in nurturing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
